HD Hyundai Heavy Industries has successfully constructed the world's largest ammonia-powered ship.

On October 22, the company held a naming ceremony for the 93,000 cubic meter (㎥) ultra-large ammonia-powered vessel at its Ulsan shipyard.

Attendees included Lee Sang-kyun, Vice Chairman of HD Hyundai Heavy Industries; Cyril Ducau, CEO of EPS; Loh Khum Yean, Chairman of the Singapore Maritime and Port Authority (MPA); Tan Beng Tee, Secretary-General of the Singapore Maritime Foundation; and John McDonald, Chairman of ABS, along with over 110 officials and employees.

This ship is the first of two vessels ordered by EPS in Singapore in 2023 and has been named 'Terra Clove.' The name combines the Latin word 'Terra,' meaning Earth, and 'Clove,' which refers to a flower bud.

The vessel features an ammonia dual-fuel propulsion system, allowing it to selectively use traditional marine fuel and eco-friendly ammonia. It is expected to be delivered after final preparations in early November.

Measuring 230 meters in length, 36.5 meters in width, and 23.6 meters in height, the ship is equipped with four cargo tanks designed and manufactured using HD Hyundai Heavy Industries' proprietary technology, enabling the stable transport of 93,000㎥ of ammonia and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). Additionally, it includes a shaft generator that produces electricity using the propulsion engine's rotating shaft and a nitrogen oxide and sulfur oxide reduction device to enhance its eco-friendliness.

Notably, the ship incorporates advanced safety technologies, including real-time ammonia leak detection and an ammonia emission reduction system, ensuring top-level safety standards.

During the naming ceremony, Lee Sang-kyun expressed, "It is an honor to have collaborated with EPS over the past 30 years to create next-generation eco-friendly vessels. The construction of this world's largest ammonia-powered ship marks a significant step forward in the decarbonization of shipping."

Earlier, in April, HD Hyundai Heavy Industries delivered the world's first 46,000㎥ medium-sized ammonia-powered gas carrier.
