Coupang is organizing employee-led volunteer activities to enhance community engagement.
On October 21, Coupang held a launch ceremony for the 'Coupang Wow Volunteer Group' in the Guui-dong area of Gwangjin-gu, Seoul, and conducted its first volunteer activity, the company announced on October 22.
The volunteer group is designed to allow employees to actively address community issues and participate in volunteer work. An operating committee composed of 18 employees will oversee planning and operations. Coupang aims to systematize existing voluntary activities and encourage ongoing participation.
The launch ceremony was attended by about 40 people, including Jang Young-cheol, Executive Director of Coupang's Social Contribution Division, committee members, volunteers, and staff from the division.
Participants shared the group's operational direction before engaging in street cleanup activities in the Guui-dong area, where Coupang's headquarters is located. The cleanup was conducted using a 'plogging' approach, which combines jogging with picking up litter.
One employee who participated in the volunteer activity said, "It was meaningful to take care of the neighborhood where I commute every day and to communicate with the residents. Although it's a small effort, I felt a sense of accomplishment knowing it could help the community."
This year, Coupang has expanded its community-focused social contribution activities, including support for medically underserved areas and disaster relief. In September, the company conducted a health screening program called 'Coupang On-Dongne Care' in Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon Province, providing medical services to over 600 local residents and North Korean defectors. More than 40 medical professionals, including doctors, traditional medicine practitioners, and dentists, participated in the health screenings and consultations.
Coupang has also continued its relief efforts in disaster-affected areas. In July, the company provided 100 emergency relief kits to Uiseong, Gyeongsangbuk-do, which was impacted by heavy rainfall, and in August, it delivered 200 'Hope Boxes' containing bedding and daily necessities to disaster victims in Geoje, Gyeongsangnam-do.
A representative from Coupang's Social Contribution Division stated, "The Wow Volunteer Group is significant because employees directly plan and participate in volunteer activities. We will continue to engage in volunteer work to ensure employees can practice sharing and connect with the community."
