Hyundai Motor Company is expanding its presence in the Southeast Asian eco-friendly commercial vehicle market by supplying electric buses to Bali, Indonesia.
On October 22, during the launch ceremony for the 'Electric Bus and Charging Infrastructure Supply Project' held at the Bali Independence Monument, Hyundai announced it has supplied 11 County Electric buses to the Bali provincial government.
This project is part of an official development assistance (ODA) initiative promoted by Indonesia's Ministry of Climate Energy and Environment. Hyundai was selected as the final contractor in a public bidding process for electric bus suppliers organized by the Global Green Growth Institute (GGGI) last October, recognized for its electric vehicle quality, after-sales service, and experience in eco-friendly ODA projects.
The County Electric buses, designed in collaboration with local specialty vehicle manufacturers, are 20-seat medium-sized electric buses equipped with a 128 kWh battery, allowing them to travel over 200 kilometers on a single charge. The 150 kW motor demonstrates more than 30% higher acceleration performance in the speed range of 50 to 80 km/h compared to diesel models.
Hyundai continues to expand its electric bus supply in Indonesia. Previously, in November 2024, it supplied 11 County Electric buses to Surabaya, the country's second-largest city. The company plans to increase supplies in major cities such as Bali, Surabaya, and Jakarta, while also expanding its market in the Asia-Pacific region.
The charging infrastructure necessary for operating the electric buses will be managed by Chaevi, a domestic rapid charging infrastructure company. Chaevi will supply and install electric bus-specific rapid chargers tailored to the local climate and power environment, overseeing everything from installation to commissioning and maintenance training.
Following the supply of electric buses, Hyundai will monitor their operational status to support the expansion of eco-friendly vehicle adoption. A Hyundai official stated, 'Based on the business experience accumulated in Indonesia, we will continue to expand our electrification commercial vehicle business in key markets.'
According to the Indonesian Automotive Industry Association (GAIKINDO), Hyundai's local sales last year reached 19,007 units, capturing a 2.4% market share. The company is targeting the local market by increasing the supply of eco-friendly commercial vehicles, including electric buses.
