SEOUL, October 27 (AJP) - A Sookmyung Women's University professor whose research spans databases, big data and artificial intelligence has been named a 2026 Distinguished Contributor by the IEEE Computer Society, which calls itself the largest global community of computer scientists and engineers.

Shim Jun-ho, a professor in the university's Division of Software, was recognized for his research and international academic work in database systems, big data analysis, e-commerce technology and AI, the university said.

The society limits the recognition each year to no more than 0.5 percent of its total membership. Candidates need at least 10 cumulative years of membership, five of them consecutive, and are evaluated on their research and their contributions to the advancement of technology.

The IEEE Computer Society is the computing arm of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a global association of engineers and scientists that publishes journals, organizes conferences and develops technical standards. Its first class of Distinguished Contributors was named in 2021, and the title is a recognition rather than a membership grade such as senior member or fellow.

Much of Shim's work has focused on speeding up how large volumes of data and web services are processed, research the university said helped advance data transfer and management technology.

He also studied ways to automatically sort and link similar products sold online. That work contributed to the development of personalized product recommendations and smarter search tools.

More recently, Shim has extended his research to generative AI, including work that helps AI systems understand the context of a conversation more accurately and produce fitting answers.

Shim thanked the IEEE Computer Society for the recognition. He also thanked the senior colleagues, peers and students who worked with him over more than 30 years of research, academic work and collaboration with industry.

Since the early 2000s, Shim has served on organizing committees and technical program committees, which review and select the papers presented, at major international conferences organized by IEEE.

He also worked as a research and development engineer at an information technology company in the United States, where he took part in building web search engines and distributed systems, networks of computers that share a single workload.
