SEOUL, October 29 (AJP) - Jeju Air has added another Boeing 737-8 to its fleet as it seeks to improve fuel efficiency and cut operating costs, the low-cost carrier said on Thursday.

With the addition, Jeju Air now has 14 Boeing 737-8s, accounting for 32.6 percent of its 43 passenger aircraft. The new aircraft will enter service after completing required procedures and receiving approval from relevant authorities.

Jeju Air said it is the only low-cost carrier in South Korea that owns its aircraft. With the latest addition, it lowered the average age of its fleet to 11.4 years, and it plans to acquire another plane by the end of this year to modernize its fleet.

"We plan to continue modernizing our fleet to improve efficiency and lay the foundation for sustainable growth," a Jeju Air spokesperson said.

The move comes as airlines face pressure to manage operating costs, particularly when fuel prices soar. Newer aircraft typically consume less fuel than older models, helping them reduce costs and improve efficiency.

Jeju Air now owns 15 aircraft, accounting for 34.9 percent of its fleet. It is also phasing out older planes, having sold three Boeing 737-800NGs to Nigerian airline Air Peace in May.
