On October 28, Gachon University President Lee Gil-yeo welcomed over 120 international students from countries including China, Vietnam, Myanmar, Mongolia, and Uzbekistan at Gachonjae in Incheon’s Yeonsu District.
According to Gachon University, the event was organized to help international students feel a sense of belonging and adapt to university life.
Students toured key facilities such as Gachon University Gil Medical Center, the Lee Gil-yeo Gynecology Memorial Hall, and the Gachon Museum, before experiencing traditional Korean architecture and cultural heritage at Gachonjae, a traditional hanok.
In his welcoming speech, President Lee shared his own experiences studying abroad and discussed Korea's development, delivering a message of challenge and hope to the students.
He stated, "Just as Korea has transformed from poverty to prosperity, I believe that your countries can achieve the same if you work hard with faith in a better future. I hope you learn from Korea's development experience at Gachon University and grow into talents who can contribute to your own countries' progress."
The event also included a scholarship award ceremony for students affected by the floods in Nepal.
Gachon University plans to provide scholarships totaling over 24 million won, or 200,000 won each, to 120 Nepali students for the upcoming spring semester.
Rosani, a student majoring in Korean studies, received the scholarship certificate on behalf of the international students.
The students also presented a gift to President Lee as a token of gratitude.
They gifted him a figurine commemorating last year's event, where he welcomed students in traditional hanbok, along with a framed collection of souvenirs from their respective countries.
Following the ceremony, cultural performances from various countries took place. Students from Mongolia and Vietnam showcased Taekwondo forms, while K-pop dances were performed by students from Mongolia and Vietnam, along with a Korean song performance by students from Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia.
A Vietnamese student introduced their culture through a traditional dance. The performances allowed students to share their traditions and the cultures they encountered in Korea.
Gachon University established the International College, dedicated to international students, last year and currently has over 7,300 international students enrolled across undergraduate and graduate programs, as well as the Korean Language Education Center.
To facilitate smooth academic and social adaptation for international students, the university operates various programs, including dedicated professors for international students, a buddy program, traditional cultural experiences, FC Gachon, mentoring, and counseling services.
President Lee added, "Gachon University is your second university. I hope you will always feel free to come to us whenever you face difficulties, and we will always support your growth."
