The Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS) said it detected the missiles being launched from Wonsan, Kangwon Province at around 12:30 p.m.
South Korean and U.S. military authorities are conducting a detailed analysis of the missiles' flight distances and other technical characteristics.
"We have stepped up surveillance and vigilance against the possibility of further launches," the JCS said, adding that South Korea, the U.S. and Japan were closely sharing information on the latest launch while maintaining a high level of military readiness.
The barrage of missiles came about a week after South Korea proposed military talks with North Korea to prevent accidental clashes along their heavily fortified border separating the two countries.
On Oct. 23, South Korea's Ministry of National Defense formally proposed inter-Korean military talks to clarify the exact location of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL), restore military communication channels and discuss measures to prevent unintended confrontations near the border.
The proposal followed a landmine explosion south of the MDL that seriously injured South Korean soldiers. Seoul accused North Korea of planting the mines, further escalating tensions between the two Koreas.
Pyongyang has yet to respond to Seoul's proposal for military talks and carried out a provocation instead, the first since Oct. 12, when North Korea fired multiple ballistic missiles from Pyongyang toward the East Sea that traveled more than 900 kilometers.
Shortly after the launches, North Korean state media reported that the missiles were test-fired to verify technological improvements to key components of tactical ballistic missiles.
