SEOUL, October 30 (AJP) - Samsung Electronics warned Friday that its technological competitiveness has yet to fully recover despite record quarterly profits, urging employees not to grow complacent amid an AI-driven memory boom.
In a message marking Samsung's 57th founding anniversary, Jun Young-hyun, vice chairman and head of the company's semiconductor division, cautioned that the current market boom may not last.
"No one can predict how long the current market conditions will continue, while external challenges are becoming increasingly intense," Jun said.
His remarks came a day after Samsung reported a record 107.4 trillion won in third-quarter operating profit, becoming the first global technology company to surpass the 100 trillion won mark in quarterly earnings.
Jun acknowledged the opportunities created by AI demand but stressed that stronger financial results did not necessarily mean Samsung had regained its technological leadership.
"Although our earnings have improved recently, it is difficult to say that our technological competitiveness has fully recovered," he said.
He called for renewed efforts to secure next-generation technologies, improve manufacturing efficiency, strengthen quality control and raise production yields.
Jun also warned employees against taking advantage of favorable market conditions in dealings with customers.
"We must never make unreasonable demands of customers or abuse our market position simply because business conditions are favorable," he said, emphasizing that customer trust remains essential to sustainable competitiveness.
Roh Tae-moon, president and head of Samsung's Device eXperience division, similarly called for stronger product quality, operational efficiency and cost competitiveness across the company's smartphone, television and home appliance businesses.
Roh said Samsung must improve product reliability and deliver differentiated AI experiences while strengthening supply chain management to secure a competitive cost structure.
He also outlined plans to develop new products, including intelligent eyewear, AI companion devices, AI televisions and home companion appliances, while expanding investments in robotics, heating and cooling systems, medical technology and automotive electronics.
Samsung did not hold a separate ceremony for its founding anniversary this year, instead delivering messages from its two chief executives. The company reportedly plans to reserve anniversary ceremonies for major milestones, such as its 60th and 70th anniversaries.
