The expo, dubbed BIOPLUS-INTERPHEX KOREA 2026 (BIX 2026), wrapped up its three-day run at COEX in southern Seoul on Friday, attracting about 12,000 visitors, according to the Korea Biotechnology Industry Organization (Korea BIO) which hosted the event.
Around 300 companies participated in the exhibition, operating 600 booths. The number of participating countries rose from 14 last year to 36 this year, reflecting growing international interest in the country's biotechnology industry.
The event also featured 30 conference sessions with more than 90 speakers from home and abroad, covering emerging technologies and strategies for bringing new treatments to market.
Key topics included artificial intelligence (AI)-driven drug discovery, radiopharmaceutical therapies, next-generation obesity treatments beyond GLP-1 drugs and biotechnology applications in space.
Business discussions focused on mergers and acquisitions, global investment and overseas market expansion. Participants also discussed setting up new companies, known as NewCos, to develop new technologies.
Canada participated as the guest country of honor, while government and industry delegations from other countries joined exhibitions, business meetings and investment presentations.
The expo also featured cooperation agreements involving South Korea, Canada and Spain, along with business exchanges with China, as organizers sought to connect domestic biotechnology companies with overseas partners.
