SK Telecom is accelerating its company-wide AI transformation, aiming to achieve tangible business results through artificial intelligence (AI).

Kim In-soo, head of the SK Telecom AI Board, unveiled the 'AX Innovation 2.0' strategy on October 30 at the company's training center in Icheon, Gyeonggi Province. He stated, "The direction of SK Telecom's AX is evolving from individual use to organizational performance."

Kim explained that as the use of AI at the individual level becomes established, a more organized approach is now necessary.

Currently, 4,000 employees at SK Telecom have created their own AI agents, and there are 1,500 AI agents regularly used within the company.

He noted, "The needs of employees utilizing AI have diversified, indicating that we need to provide more detailed support. As we identify future challenges, we aim to address them in this 2.0 phase."

The AX 2.0 strategy is centered around three main pillars. The first is the AX Enabler Task Force, which supports employees facing difficulties and systemic limitations while using multiple AIs.

Kim emphasized the need for systematic management as AI is integrated into internal systems like electronic approvals, emails, and enterprise resource planning (ERP), which can intertwine with company policies and issues.

An AX Sandbox has also been established to experiment with redesigning specific tasks around AI. While the first half of the year focused on testing AI adoption in service development departments, the second half sees various departments conducting sandbox experiments over three months.

The final pillar, AX Catalyst, involves selecting ten key personnel to lead AX initiatives within the company. Their performance will be analyzed to identify elements necessary for future organizational AX efforts. The first cohort is currently operational, with plans to expand to a second cohort next year.

New technologies to support the acceleration of AX within the organization are also under development.

One notable innovation is the 'Z.E.Z' technology, which safely protects sensitive data while only delivering necessary results to AI for task processing. Kim explained, "We can manage original documents like receipts and proof of expenses separately while providing only metadata and comparison tokens to AI, effectively creating a secure zone."

A data desk has also been established to facilitate access to scattered internal data, which is often difficult to navigate due to its technical language. The AI agent at the data desk helps locate and provide data easily, automatically generating explanations and context.

Kim clarified that the model used for the data desk is not ChatGPT but SK Telecom's local model, A.X K1. He noted that the initial accuracy rate for handling questions was 40%, but it has now exceeded 80% quality.

Additionally, a 'Work Map' will be introduced in the future, allowing AI to analyze work materials and collaboratively create task outlines with employees.

The global trend of AI adoption among companies is evident, with concerns that efficiency may temporarily decline as businesses undergo retraining and task redesign.

In response, Kim stated, "We consider AI as a colleague and work alongside it. We will accelerate the AX movement to navigate through the inevitable J-curve of innovation."

Meanwhile, prior to the announcement of the AX strategy, an internal program called the 'EBB AX Club' was held. Participants were tasked with solving a mission related to web crawling, based on a scenario involving the discovery of a new deep-sea fish that garnered significant interest at a telecommunications technology forum. They utilized AI to fill in blanks in a report.

Within one to two minutes of starting the task, a participant emerged as the winner by quickly solving all problems. They explained that they had trained Claude with various data and quickly obtained results by inputting the relevant address. SK Telecom conducts the EBB AX Club every Wednesday to encourage employees to use AI as a familiar and practical work tool.
