South Korean Foreign Minister Jo Hyun attended the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting held in Atlanta, USA, where he addressed the recent landmine explosion incident in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) and emphasized the importance of communication between North and South Korea.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on November 1, Minister Jo reported during the two-day meeting from October 30 that the deepening military cooperation between North Korea and Russia poses a serious threat to security on the Korean Peninsula and in the region. He requested support and cooperation from G20 member countries, stating that the South Korean government will spare no effort in promoting peace and reducing tensions on the peninsula.

He also highlighted the impact of geopolitical conflicts on the global economy and raised the need for international cooperation to ensure safe navigation and address food security threats directly linked to livelihoods in the Strait of Hormuz.

In this context, he noted South Korea's participation in the EU-led 'International Maritime Law Commitment' opposing illegal restrictions on navigation in international straits, asserting that the South Korean government will continue to make substantial contributions to ensuring free and safe navigation in the Strait of Hormuz.

During the second session, he pointed out that the ongoing situation in the Middle East and the surge in demand for artificial intelligence have made securing 'stable and affordable energy' increasingly important. He proposed directions for cooperation, including strengthening joint response capabilities and energy transition.

Minister Jo stated that South Korea aims to serve as an energy hub connecting oil-producing and consuming countries, leveraging its excellent refining capacity, storage infrastructure, and maritime network, while seeking effective cooperation to enhance energy security in the Asia-Pacific region with the expertise of organizations like the OECD and the International Energy Agency (IEA).

In the final session on supply chains, he emphasized the necessity of diversifying supply chains beyond energy reserves to overcome dependence on specific regions or resources due to the current Middle Eastern conflict. He introduced South Korea's efforts to strengthen global supply chain resilience, including participation in the Geostrategic Resource Cooperation Forum (FORGE).

He also evaluated the agreement reached at this year's G20 Energy Ministers' Meeting on voluntary cooperation regarding standards, research, and information sharing related to critical minerals, stressing the need to develop this into practical supply chain cooperation at the G20 level.

Additionally, Minister Jo held bilateral meetings with foreign ministers from the United States, Indonesia, Germany, Poland, India, the EU, the UK, and Mexico to discuss ways to enhance bilateral relations, practical cooperation, and mutual interests regarding major regional issues.

Following the meeting, as part of the official G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting events, he attended a college football game between the Florida Gators and the Georgia Bulldogs at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, invited by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The government aims to strengthen cooperation with member countries to ensure the successful hosting of the G20 Miami Summit in December and to achieve substantial outcomes at the G20 level leading up to its presidency in 2028.
