SEOUL -- Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power (KHNP), the state-run operator of nuclear power plants in South Korea, partnered with an American engineering company to win an order for the renovation of a nuclear power plant in Romania.
KHNP said Friday that its president, Chung Jae-hoo, signed a business tie-up in Bucharest with Sargent & Lundy, a Chicago-based company which provides comprehensive services for complex power generation and power transmission projects.
Romania has 1,400 MW of nuclear power capacity by operating one active nuclear power plant with two reactors in Cernavoda. The East European country plans to build a second plant in Transylvania.
Romanian's first plant used the same type of reactors installed in an old nuclear power plant in Wolseong in the southeastern city of Gyeongju. KHNP has renovated the Wolseong plant.
In the face of a setback in South Korea's nuclear energy industry, KHNP has stepped up efforts to diversify its business portfolio at home and abroad. Last year, KHNP won a deal in September to build and manage a 48-megawatt hydropower plant in Indonesia, followed by an order to build and manage a 496-megawatt hydropower plant in Pakistan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Province.
