SEOUL -- A 3D printing technology hub will be built in the southeastern industrial city of Ulsan in a government project to nurture 3D printing as one of its next growth engines. The Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), a state research body, leads the project that will cost about 45 billion won ($37 million).

UNIST has been selected for the project to build a 3D printing convergence technology center on its industrial-academic convergence campus. Ulsan has designated the site as a technological hub for research into 3D printing, which is essential in the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

The project aims to establish an automation system, a digital factory and a standard system for technology demonstration and support the demonstration of mass-production processes. 3D printing has been researched around the world because of versatility. A government project has been launched to develop software and materials for medical and biochemical use.
