"Through this demonstration, Samsung is proud to achieve another breakthrough record in 5G data speeds, now spotlighting the power of using a dual 4G and 5G approach, delivered directly to a single user," Seol Ji-yun who heads the air technology section of Samsung's network business, said in a statement on March 4.
Theoretically, the speed of 5G data communication can reach 20Gbps according to the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), a collaboration between groups of telecom standards associations. South Korean companies have tried to increase 5G download speeds since they commercialized 5G mobile networks based on non-standalone (NSA) standards in 2019, using 4G infrastructure before switching to 5G standalone (SA).
For its latest achievement, Samsung used E-UTRAN New Radio Dual Connectivity (EN-DC) technology, which enables mobile operators to boost 5G speeds and coverage by leveraging a 4G network. The company also leveraged "carrier aggregation" that combines two or more carriers into a single data channel to increase the maximum data capacity. Different frequency bands can be combined to enhance speed.
