SEOUL -- The operator of South Korea's convenience store franchise GS25, partnered with Gayeon, a popular domestic matchmaking consulting agency, to provide a marriage advisory service for consumers looking for lifetime partners. Convenience store customers can receive marriage-related advice by simply scanning a QR code of Gayeon's matchmaking service-related advertisement attached near GS25 convenience store's counter.

Matchmaking service is used by some consumers who hope to find compatible partners. Matchmaking service customers provide their personal information such as their personality and job in order to find their perfect match. After subscribing to a service, customers receive matchmaking ratings depending on their financial status, educational background and height. The relationship service, which includes advisory and matchmaking, can cost more than 5 million won ($3,863) per year. It becomes more expensive depending on the partners' matchmaking rating.

GS Retail, the operator of GS25, teamed up with Gayeon to provide a matchmaking service so that users can receive advice from Gayeon's matchmakers just by using QR codes displayed at GS25 stores. Customers can receive discount benefits by signing up for the service until December 4, 2023.

As of 2020, 33 percent of Gayeon members were men aged between 36 and 39 with an average annual income of 50 million won. About 38 percent were women aged between 29 and 34 with an average annual income of 41 million won. While men's average height was 174.6 centimeters (5'8.7"), women were 162.9 centimeters tall. Most members graduated from a four-year university.

In a 2022 survey of some 36,000 people aged more than 12, conducted by the national statistics office, about 50 percent of South Koreans said that marriage is necessary. While 55.8 percent of men said marriage is necessary, only 44.3 percent of women said they should get married. The lack of marriage funds accounted for the main reason for remaining unmarried with 28.7 percent, followed by unstable employment with 14.6 percent.
