Samsung SDI is currently developing P6 and plans to start its mass production in 2024. According to the battery maker, the increased proportion of nickel in the battery pack's cathode, an electrode, to up to 91 percent to maximize the energy density and performance.
Samsung SDI said the P6 will be supplied to Hyundai Motor from 2026 to 2032. After being produced at a plant in Hungary, the box-shaped batteries will be delivered to the automaker's factory in Europe. "The company will make best efforts to help Hyundai Motor reinforce its global market leadership by expanding long-term partnership with the automaker by providing the customer with unrivaled technologies and supreme quality," Samsung SDI CEO Choi Yoon-ho said in a statement on October 23.
Without disclosing details, Samsung SDI said it would cooperate with Hyundai Motor for the development of next-generation battery platforms.
There are three types of batteries -- prismatic, pouch, and cylindrical. Prismatic batteries, encased in aluminum or steel, are designed to improve stability and meet demands for compact sizes. Although they can save space and enable flexible design, prismatic cells tend to be more expensive to produce and have a shorter lifespan compared to cylindrical types.
