The quintet's four-track album, "Supernatural," ascended to No. 1 on the Oricon's daily singles chart on June 21, immediately after its release and remained there the following day.
First released in 1968, the chart serves as one of key indicators for gauging the popularity of songs and albums in the island country.
"Supernatural" is a song that reinterprets some parts of "Back of My Mind," a 2009 song produced by American singer-songwriter Pharrell Williams.
To coincide with their debut in Japan and promote their album, the five members are set to hold a two-day event at Tokyo Dome this week. Tickets for the event on June 26 and 27 have already sold out. Holding a concert or event at the dome, which has a capacity of up to 50,000 people, is often considered a testament to a success in Japan.
NewJeans, composed of members Danielle, Haerin, Hanni, Hyein and Minji, garnered attention earlier for their collaboration with Japanese contemporary artist Murakami Takashi on a music video for their pre-released song "Right Now" from the album.
Murakami, renowned for blending Japanese traditional art with pop culture, is considered one of Japan's most beloved artists. He has previously collaborated with American singer Billie Eilish and K-pop group Blackpink.
