Table tennis duo Lim Jong-hoon and Shin Yu-bin won bronze in the mixed doubles, defeating their opponents from Hong Kong in the third-place match. Their bronze medal ended a 12-year drought since the country won silver in the men's team event in 2012.
Tuesday's victory is even more special for Lim, who was due to begin his mandatory military service next month, but is now exempt thanks to his medal.
The event's silver medal went to North Korea after it lost to China in the final.
It was the first medal for the isolated country, which made its return to the Olympics after an eight-year absence, having skipped the Tokyo Olympics in 2021 due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Later in the day, jodoka Lee Joon-hwan won bronze after defeating Belgium's Matthias Casse in the men's -81-kg category.
His victory added another medal in judo for South Korea, following Japanese-born Huh Mi-mi's silver-medal finish the previous day.
Despite missing out on a podium finish, South Korea made history by advancing to the final of an Olympic swimming relay for the first time.
Meanwhile, Korea ranked fifth in the overall gold-medal count at the Olympics as of Wednesday, trailing Japan, China, Australia, and France.
