SEOUL, August 12 (AJU PRESS) - The South Korean Army has deployed a four-legged walking robot for counter-terrorism operations on a trial basis for the first time, the Defense Acquisition Program Administration (DAPA) said Monday.

Hyundai Rotem and Rainbow Robotics participated in developing the system, which was completed on Aug. 5, two years after it was selected for the military's rapid pilot program in August 2022.

The robot can move at speeds exceeding 4 kilometers per hour and climb vertical obstacles such as 20-centimeter-high stairs, according to DAPA. It is equipped with cameras for surveillance and reconnaissance missions.

In terrorist incidents, the robot can help soldiers assess threats. It can also be fitted with various detachable devices, including remote-controlled pistols.

The military will test the robot in border security, search and reconnaissance operations.

It will be deployed to the Special Warfare Command and a front-line division over the next six months. The military will evaluate its performance and utility before deciding whether to adopt it.
