The KOSPI index surpassed the 7140 mark during trading, buoyed by strong performances in semiconductor stocks. Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix continued their upward trend from the previous day, while nuclear power-related stocks also contributed to the index's gains.

As of 11:40 a.m. on September 8, the KOSPI had risen by 145.04 points (2.07%) to reach 7140.43. The KOSDAQ index also saw an increase of 6.34 points (0.77%), reaching 828.53.

In the main stock market, foreign and institutional investors made net purchases of 185.4 billion won and 567 billion won, respectively, helping to lift the index. In contrast, individual investors sold a net 1.484 trillion won. In the KOSDAQ market, individuals and foreigners bought a net 85.6 billion won and 20.1 billion won, while institutions sold 107.2 billion won.

Among the top market capitalization stocks, Samsung Electronics traded at 277,250 won, up 2.69%. SK Hynix rose 4.32% to 1,860,000 won. Other gainers included SK Square (up 4.62%), Samsung C&T (up 3.65%), and Samsung Life (up 1.44%).

The KOSDAQ market also saw strong performances from semiconductor-related stocks. JUSUNG Engineering surged 10.84% to 207,500 won. Other gainers included Simtek (up 4.76%), Rino Industry (up 4.09%), HPSP (up 3.56%), and Wonik IPS (up 1.62%).

However, some large-cap stocks faced declines. Samsung Electro-Mechanics fell 1.58%, and LG Energy Solution dropped 1.52%. Samsung Biologics (-0.68%) and Hyundai Motor (-0.64%) also experienced losses.

Nuclear power-related stocks are seeing increased investor sentiment due to expectations surrounding follow-up projects from the U.S.-Korea investment initiative. Lee Kyung-min, a researcher at Daishin Securities, stated, "The South Korean government is pursuing the construction of a liquefied natural gas combined cycle power plant in Texas, estimated at around 30 trillion won, as the first project under the U.S.-Korea investment initiative, with discussions ongoing for the construction of up to eight large nuclear power plants as follow-up projects."

However, tensions in the Middle East and fluctuations in international oil prices could increase market volatility. The researcher noted, "The U.S. White House and Department of Defense are expecting support for the protection of freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz from allied nations, while Iran has warned that South Korea's military presence or operational participation could lead to serious consequences."

In the afternoon session, the continuation of the semiconductor rally led by Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix will likely determine whether the index can rise further. With the KOSPI recently surpassing the 7000 mark and climbing toward 7100, it will be important to observe whether the buying momentum from foreign and institutional investors continues as profit-taking occurs.
