SEOUL, September 16 (AJP) - Director Park Hoon-jung's action thriller "Sad Tropics," also known as "Tristes Tropiques," has won the top award at the annual L'Etrange Festival in Paris, the film's distributor said on Wednesday.
The 107-minute film won the top honor, the Nouveau Genre Grand Prize, after competing in the festival's international competition, which wrapped up its two-week run last Saturday.
Now in its 32nd year, the festival, held annually in September, is dedicated to atypical, bizarre and genre cinema including horror, fantasy, science fiction and experimental films.
Previous South Korean films invited to the festival include "Exhuma," "Concrete Utopia" and "The Spy Gone North."
"Sad Tropics" is a hard-boiled action noir about a group of killers raised by the ruler of a tropical rainforest. After a mysterious incident threatens their existence, they turns against one another and embarks on a bloody quest for revenge.
The latest award adds to the film's growing recognition overseas. It was previously invited to Spain's Sitges Film Festival in October last year and won the Silver Raven Award, a special jury prize recognizing an outstanding film in genre cinema at the Brussels International Fantastic Film Festival in April this year. The film was also invited to Germany's Fantasy Filmfest, the largest genre film festival there.
"Sad Tropics" is expected to hit local theaters here sometime later this year.
