Hyundai Engineering has secured a contract for the construction of a $870 million AI data center in Gunsan. The data center, with a capacity of 60 megawatts, is set to begin construction in October.
According to Hyundai Engineering, the SGC AI Data Center will be located on a 115,702 square meter site in the Bieungdo-dong area of Gunsan, North Jeolla Province. This project is the first phase of a planned 300 megawatt AI data center cluster by the SGC Group, with the initial 60 megawatts being prioritized for development.
Hyundai Engineering will handle construction across various sectors, including architecture, civil engineering, equipment, landscaping, and telecommunications. In the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing (MEP) sector, the company will establish cooling towers, chillers, and power distribution equipment. KT Cloud will be responsible for uninterruptible power supplies (UPS), batteries, and automated controls.
The data center will incorporate NVIDIA's next-generation AI semiconductor, the Vera Rubin, along with Vertiv's modular skid power and cooling solutions. Hyundai Engineering plans to focus on building the necessary power and cooling infrastructure for high-density AI server operations.
On August 25, the city of Gunsan and SGC AI Infrastructure signed an investment agreement worth 872 billion won, announcing plans to commence the first phase of 60 megawatts in October and to begin operations in the first quarter of 2028. Hyundai Engineering aims to secure preferential negotiation rights for the remaining 240 megawatts based on the execution of this first phase.
Hyundai Engineering has also been selected as a preferred bidder for data center projects in Incheon and Gumi, North Gyeongsang Province, with plans to finalize contracts by the end of the year. If these contracts are secured, the company expects its total orders in the data center sector for this year to reach approximately 1.9 trillion won.
A representative from Hyundai Engineering stated, "We will implement data centers equipped with a stable power supply and operational environment required for the AI era."
