Jeju Air is accelerating its fleet modernization with the introduction of next-generation aircraft.
On October 29, Jeju Air announced the acquisition of its 14th B737-8 aircraft, which will be put into operation following the completion of relevant procedures, including airworthiness certification by authorities.
With this addition, the B737-8 now accounts for 32.6% of Jeju Air's total fleet of 43 passenger aircraft. The total number of purchased aircraft has increased to 15, raising the proportion of purchased aircraft to 34.9% of the total fleet.
Jeju Air is the only low-cost carrier in South Korea to own purchased aircraft. The introduction of new aircraft has lowered the average age of its fleet to 11.4 years. The airline plans to acquire one more aircraft by the end of the year to continue its fleet modernization efforts.
A Jeju Air official stated, "In the context of high fuel prices, the introduction of fuel-efficient new aircraft plays a crucial role in alleviating operational cost burdens. We aim to enhance operational efficiency through fleet modernization and solidify our foundation for sustainable growth."
Meanwhile, Jeju Air is also selling its existing aircraft alongside the introduction of new ones. In May, the airline sold three B737-800NG aircraft to the Nigerian airline Air Peace.
