SEOUL, November 5 (AJP) - President Lee Jae Myung on Thursday welcomed Timor-Leste President José Ramos-Horta on his first official visit to South Korea this week, expressing hope that the two countries would expand cooperation.

In a post on X, Lee expressed his pleasure at Ramos-Horta's visit, adding "Bem-vindu!," the Tetum word for "welcome."

At Lee's invitation, Ramos-Horta is visiting Seoul from Wednesday through Saturday, marking the first official visit by an East Timorese leader since the two countries established diplomatic relations in 2002.

With his visit coming just ahead of the 25th anniversary of bilateral relations next year, Lee expressed hope that the milestone would provide an opportunity to build on the two countries' longstanding friendship and expand cooperation.

Lee said the two countries have built close ties over the years based on their shared commitment to peace and democracy. Their cooperation has since expanded to include economic and social development, with both countries becoming reliable partners that support each other in the international community.

Lee also praised Ramos-Horta, the 1996 Nobel Peace Prize laureate, for his lifelong commitment to peace and democracy, saying his visit was particularly meaningful.

The two leaders are scheduled to hold a summit on Thursday, where they are expected to discuss ways to deepen bilateral cooperation and strengthen coordination on regional peace and prosperity.

The talks come as Timor-Leste, which joined the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) as its 11th member last year, seeks to strengthen its role in the region.
