Pulmuone adopts AR smart glasses to inspect food factories

SEOUL -- As part of its digital transformation, South Korean food company Pulmuone chose to adopt augmented reality smart glasses at food factories for thorough quality checks in real-time.

AR smart glasses are a type of head-mounted display (HMD) equipment that uses a camera to analyze the surroundings of the wearer and display information through a small prism located on the eyepiece of the glasses. Images are shown as if they are floating in the air. Wearers can move hands freely and the control tower can receive real-time video feed.

Pulmuone said in a statement on December 11 that it would gradually distribute AR smart glasses to factories at home and abroad. "We've prepared for the adoption of a digital management system using smart glasses to upgrade our food management capabilities," Pulmuone's R&D Center head Lee Sang-yun said, adding the company aims to achieve the highest standards in food management by upgrading remote non-face-to-face technologies.

The food company said that with HMD equipment, workers can manage factories remotely and cope with disastrous situations in real-time. AR glasses will allow partner companies to manage product quality by communicating with the control tower and can be used for educating workers.

Pulmuone was launched as an organic food company in South Korea in 1981. The company's U.S. branch secured a cumulative market share of 75 percent in the American tofu market in the third quarter of 2019, according to market research firm Nielsen.
