Han Byeong-do: People Power Party is Becoming an Extreme Right Party

Han Byeong-do, the floor leader of the Democratic Party, emphasized on September 3 that the People Power Party is heading towards becoming an extreme right party, particularly in light of its recent actions involving former Presidents Park Geun-hye and Lee Myung-bak. He stated, "We must stay alert and focus on national interests and the people's livelihoods."

During a party meeting held at the National Assembly, Han remarked, "Observing the recent behavior of the People Power Party, I feel a strong need for us to be vigilant and proactive."

He criticized the People Power Party for seemingly abandoning its responsibilities as a public party, pointing out that the recent actions of its leader, Jang Dong-hyuk, have normalized disrespectful language towards the president. He recalled instances where party members were seen protesting with signs saying, 'Let’s fight, Lee Jae-myung,' which have become memorable for many.

Han also directed his remarks at People Power Party member Lee Jin-suk, stating, "Despite belittling the May 18 Democratic Uprising, there is no sense of shame. It is so bad that I have had to remind politicians to uphold basic human decency and etiquette. It is embarrassing to be engaged in legislative activities with such individuals in our time."

He mentioned a recent training session where the People Power Party invited former President Park Geun-hye, who was the first president in South Korea's history to be impeached, to give a lecture. He also noted that they sought advice on the party's future from former President Lee Myung-bak, who was sentenced to 17 years in prison for bribery and embezzlement.

Han stated, "This seems like a declaration to inherit the political legacy of corruption and abuse of power. There are even open calls for the restoration of Park's honor, claiming her impeachment was 'political.'" He expressed concern that, under these circumstances, there may soon be discussions about reevaluating Yoon Suk-yeol as a national hero.

He concluded, "What the public desires is certainly not this extreme right behavior. We must urgently prepare policies and alternatives that enhance people's livelihoods and future during this regular session of the National Assembly."
